Whenever a new cloud storage and file-sharing service hits the market, a Dropbox comparison is inevitable. Founded in 2007 by CEO Drew Houston (pictured) and chief technology officer Arash Ferdowsi, the company boasts 50 million customers, who are drawn to the service because of its simplicity. Users just sign up, download a desktop client and mobile apps, and then any file saved in the Dropbox folder on one device shows up on all the others.
The popularity of Dropbox has serious ramifications for IT. It raises questions about the usability of traditional network file shares and it emphasizes the importance of identifying, managing and securing mobile data.
Dropbox’s 2011 security breach left user accounts open to the public and should also give IT pause, although the company now focuses more on businesses with its Dropbox for Teams service.
