Bluetooth.org Abstract: "The name Bluetooth is taken from the 10th century Danish King Harald Blatand -- or Harold Bluetooth in English. During the formative stage of the Trade Association a code name was needed to name the effort. Over an evening discussing European history and the future of wireless technology several felt it was appropriate to name the technology after King Blatand. He had been instrumental in uniting warring factions in parts of what is now Norway, Sweden and Denmark - just as the technology is designed to allow collaboration between differing industries such as the computing, mobile phone and automotive markets. The code name stuck."

  • Mike Disabato, Senior Analyst, Burton Group: "Things get interesting with version 2.0, which is due out a year and half after 1.2. At the high end, it can transmit data at 12 Mbps. With that throughput, you can start streaming video."
  • Bluetooth SIG: "Total worldwide shipments of devices incorporating the short-range wireless technology Bluetooth have exceeded one million units per week for the first time."
  • Ollie Whitehouse, Director of security architecture, AtStake: "Businesses will obviously gain from using Bluetooth. They should not ban it outright, but they should understand the risks. They need to deploy it in a controlled manner, not just automatically adopt it."
  • Jon Fortt, Mercury News: "Bluetooth, the wireless technology that replaces the cables on electronics, is set to have a big year in 2004. The companies that see the trends first -- companies like chip maker Broadcom and testing-equipment maker Agilent Technologies -- are confident of it."
