- HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) - often compared to Wireless Markup Language (WML) - is a language that allows the text portions of Web pages to be presented on cellular telephones and personal digital assistants (PDA) via wireless access. Developed by Unwired Planet, HDML is an open language offered royalty-free. According to UP's president Chuck Parrish, any programmer with working knowledge of HTML, CGI, and SQL should be able to write a presentation layer using HDML. One major difference between HDML and WML is that WML is XML-based, while HDML is not. Another difference between HDML and WML is that HDML does not allow scripting, while WML allows it's own version of JavaScript, called WMLScript. Although Unwired Planet has changed their name to Phone.com, specifications for HDML are still available on their Web site in PDF format.
