BRONZE AWARD: APC PCMCIA Password Manager
Even the most scatterbrained and unhygienic computer user can secure his computer against identity theft using the American Power Conversion's APC PCMCIA Password Manager. It fits into the PCMCIA slot of a notebook computer and stores login and password information. A finger sensor with TruePrint technology is able to identify the user by scanning fingerprints below the surface of the skin; according to its manufacturers, "TruePrint is not affected by common skin surface conditions including dry, worn, calloused, dirty or oily skin that can affect other sensors' ability to acquire accurate fingerprint images for user authentication purposes."
The password manager scored high in innovation and ease of use, with one judge labeling it "biometric security for far less than a computer upgrade." However, another judge disagreed, feeling that despite being useful the Password Manager is "too expensive." APC estimates that the resale price of the PCMCIA Password Manager will be $149.99.
