AT&T has announced that it will be offering free Wi-Fi to its smartphone users, at some point. AT&T later said that the announcement was placed on its website prematurely.

Late last week, AT&T surprised customers by posting a note on its web site that said free access to this telecom's Wi-Fi hotspots was part of their iPhone service. However, this was quickly removed.

The New York Times was able to get an explanation for this out of an AT&T spokesman, who said the note was premature. This telecom plans to eventually include access to its network of hotspots along with the service plans of all its Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones, not just the iPhone.

The spokesperson did not, however, say when his company intends to start offering this.

AT&T offers Wi-Fi service at more than 7,000 locations across the United States. In addition, the telecom is in the process of taking over offering Wi-Fi access at Starbucks locations.
