Samsung Tizen

Contributor(s): Colin Steele

Samsung Tizen is Samsung's implementation of Tizen, an open source mobile operating system.

Tizen is an open source project that is being developed by the Linux Foundation. The Tizen software development kit (SDK) and application program interface (API) allows developers to employ HTML5 and related web technologies to write software applications that run across these multiple devices -- including printers, cameras, smart TVs and in-car displays.

Samsung is one of 12 technology vendors that have formed an industry group to develop and promote the operating system, which is built on the Linux kernel. Other members of the group, which is called the Tizen Association, include Huawei, Intel and Sprint.

No Samsung Tizen devices were available as of October 2013, but industry observers expected them to hit the market by the end of the year.
