Yes, there has been evidence of demand for such mobile phones that can be truly called world phones. Qualcomm, which pioneered CDMA technology, outlined its plans in 2002 for a chipset that would power phones that could shamelessly roam between the CDMA and GSM worlds. Mobile phones based on the MSM6500 chipset are currently in trials in Asia and Latin America and support CDMA 1X, CDMA 1xEV-DO and roaming on GSM/GPRS networks.
