UWB is a very low power technology that has the ability to penetrate walls and other physical interferences to radio signals unlike 802.11 and Bluetooth. It also has the ability to transmit signals over several channels at the same time thus increasing throughput as well as send in very short bursts to minimize interference with other devices. Right now, UWB is a local area communications system with a range of 30 feet or so, but that is expected to increase. It is expected to work for not only local area (and eventually wide area) network communications, but also for home automation (appliances, multimedia systems, garage doors, etc.), medical imaging, and automobile detection systems as well.
